There are several types of compressors and refrigeration systems. But what are the main advantages and disadvantages of each? Is there any that are better? How to choose the ideal one for my project?
These are very frequently asked questions. In this text, we present in an introductory way each type of system, its main advantages and disadvantages. Good reading!
What are the types of compressors?
There are three types of refrigeration systems, which relate to how the compressor is positioned next to the electric motor.
- Hermetic: motor and compressor are together, in a completely sealed system.
- Semi-hermetic: similar to hermetic, but with a closed system with screws.
- Open: motor and compressor are in separate structures.
The operating principle of compressors can be: reciprocating, centrifugal, screw, rotary and scroll.
Now, let’s see in detail the differences between each type of system.
What are hermetic compressors?
In this system, electric motor and compressor are together, inside a hermetically sealed housing. Among the main advantages are low leakage probability, long service life and low noise level.
The main disadvantages are related to the impossibility of opening the housing. For this reason, maintenance becomes complex.
We also made a blog post that discusses hermetic compressors in more detail. Read it here.
What are semi-hermetic compressors?
Semi-hermetic compressors also have a motor and a compressor inside the same housing. But, in this case, it is not completely sealed, but fastened by screws.
This feature makes preventive maintenance and repairs easier. In hermetic compressors, it is necessary to replace the entire system in the event of a component failure.
The main downside is that semi-hermetic compressors are often more expensive. They can be used in commercial establishments such as supermarkets or shopping malls.
What are open compressors?
In an open system, motor and compressor are separate and can be connected by pulleys or belts. They are more potent, used, for example, in the food industry.
It is possible to control the power of this type of compressor by changing the rotation speed of the motor, or by replacing the size of the pulleys.
Due to the characteristics of the system, it is possible to access them individually for repairs. However, there may be wear of the parts that make the connection between the motor and the compressor, which can lead to leaks of refrigerant fluid.
How to choose the best type of compressor?
There are several criteria that define which type of compressor is the most suitable for your project.
For example:
- Cooling Capacity: It’s self-explanatory – depending on the system, it may not meet your project needs. Therefore, the power of the compressor is one of the first selection criteria.
- Economy: analyze the price of the equipment, energy efficiency it offers and pay attention to the possibility of carrying out repairs or not.
- Noise level: it is mainly related to the comfort it offers to those who use the equipment.
Here at Vibroacustica, we have developed several projects to improve the quality of compressors in various characteristics, such as noise level, vibration and energy efficiency.
